Thread repair
How a BaerCoil Repair Works
A stripped thread in an expensive part does not have to mean scrapping it.
- 1
Drill Out
Drill the damaged thread out to the STI tap drill size for the thread you are repairing.
- 2
Tap
Cut the oversize thread with a Baer STI tap: bottoming for blind holes, spiral point for through holes.
- 3
Fit the Insert
Wind the BaerCoil insert in with an installation tool until it sits just below the surface.
- 4
Done
The hole takes a standard bolt again, at its original size and pitch.
Questions
Baer Tools: Common Questions
What is an STI tap?
STI stands for screw thread insert. An STI tap cuts a thread larger than the nominal size, so a wire thread insert can be fitted and bring the hole back to the original thread. An M8 x 1.25 insert needs an M8 x 1.25 STI tap, not a standard M8 tap.
What lengths do BaerCoil inserts come in?
BaerCoil inserts are sold by nominal length as a multiple of the thread diameter: 1 x D, 1.5 x D, 2 x D, 2.5 x D and 3 x D, depending on the size. A longer insert spreads the load over more thread, which matters in soft materials such as aluminium.
What is the difference between a circular die and a hexagon die nut?
A circular die sits in a diestock and cuts a new external thread. A hexagon die nut is turned with a spanner and is mainly used to re-cut or clean up a damaged thread, especially where there is no room to swing a diestock.
Which diestock fits my die?
Diestocks are sized by the outside diameter and thickness of the die, for example 20.6 x 6.35 mm. Check the die dimensions on its product page and choose the diestock with the same size.
Which Baer circular die should I choose for my material?
Baer makes circular dies for general use, for higher demands, for stainless steels and, in metric coarse, for brass. The material version is in the product title, and the thread form table above links each one.
