A tap cuts or forms threads inside a hole; a die cuts threads on the outside of a rod or bolt, usually held in a die stock while you turn it. Dies come in round, hexagon and square profiles.
Hand taps are turned by hand and are the most common type — sold as a taper/second/bottom set for threading a blind hole to full depth, or as single bottoming taps for through holes. Power taps run in a machine. Heli-coil taps and metric oversize taps repair damaged or worn threads by cutting a new, slightly larger thread in place of the original.
