Tooling for Every Aerospace Operation

The right cutting tool for titanium, aluminium alloys, Inconel and CFRP — all available in stock for next-day delivery.

The Aerospace Challenge

When there's no margin for error, the tooling has to be right

Aerospace machining is about as unforgiving as it gets. Tight tolerances, difficult materials, strict traceability requirements and zero tolerance for scrap. The wrong cutting tool doesn't just cost money — on flight-critical parts, it can ground an aircraft.

Titanium, Inconel 718, 7075 aluminium, CFRP — each material demands a specific cutting geometry, grade and coating. A tool that works brilliantly on stainless steel will work terribly on titanium.

We stock cutting tools from brands including Carmex, OSG, Palbit and Widin — all selected for performance in difficult aerospace materials. Our applications team can help you match the right tool to your specific job.

Common Aerospace Machining Challenges

  • 🌡️

Heat in titanium and nickel alloys

Ti and Inconel are poor conductors — heat stays in the cutting zone. Through-coolant tooling and correct cutting data are essential to avoid built-up edge and premature failure.

  • 📏

    Sub-±0.01mm tolerances

Aerospace components routinely require tolerances that demand ultra-precise toolholding, consistent tool geometry and rigorous first-article verification.

  • 🧵

    Threaded features in difficult materials

Tapping titanium is risky — tap breakage is expensive and scraps the part. Thread milling eliminates that risk entirely and allows rework if the thread isn't right first time.

  • Traceability and batch consistency

Aerospace requires documented tooling and batch consistency. We can supply the same tool geometry, grade and coating repeatedly — and our team can advise on tool life data.

Precision Cutting Tools for Aerospace Machining — Protool Ltd

Protool supplies cutting tools for aerospace manufacturers across the UK, including carbide drills, thread mills, solid carbide end mills, turning inserts and toolholding for machining titanium, Inconel, aluminium alloys and other aerospace-grade materials.

Aerospace machining places exceptional demands on cutting tools. Titanium alloys such as Ti6Al4V generate high cutting temperatures and are prone to work hardening — requiring specific carbide grades with PVD coatings, through-coolant capability and conservative cutting data. Nickel superalloys such as Inconel 718 are notoriously difficult to machine, with high strength at elevated temperatures and a tendency to cause built-up edge on the cutting face. CFRP machining requires diamond-coated or specialist geometry tools to prevent delamination. Our team can help you select the correct tool for every aerospace material and operation.

Thread Milling for Aerospace Fastener Features

Thread milling is the preferred threading method for aerospace components machined in titanium and nickel alloys. Unlike tapping, thread milling uses a rotating cutter to interpolate the thread profile — eliminating the risk of tap breakage in the workpiece. A single solid carbide thread mill can produce any thread diameter, allowing rework if the thread profile needs adjusting. Carmex thread mills, available from Protool, cover all standard aerospace thread profiles including ISO Metric, Unified (UNC/UNF), BSP, NPT and NPTF.

Drilling Titanium and Inconel for Aerospace

Through-coolant solid carbide drills are the standard for drilling titanium and Inconel in aerospace applications. The coolant delivered directly to the cutting edge reduces thermal load, improves chip evacuation and significantly extends tool life compared to standard drills. Protool stocks solid carbide through-coolant drills in a wide range of diameters for aerospace hole-making operations, with same-day dispatch for orders placed before 4:30pm.

Precision Toolholding for Aerospace Machining Centres

Achieving aerospace tolerances requires not just the right cutting tool but the right toolholder. We stock BT, HSK and DIN69871 spindle tooling, ER precision collet chucks, hydraulic holders and heat-shrink toolholders from leading manufacturers. Reduced runout and vibration directly improves surface finish and dimensional accuracy on flight-critical components.
