Tooling for Medical Device Machining
From micro-turning implant blanks on Swiss lathes to threading bone screws and inspecting with CMM styli — we have the tools you need.
Carmex Tiny Tools
The world's smallest indexable turning and threading inserts — designed for micro-precision work on Swiss-type lathes. Thread from M0.3 upward. Ideal for bone screw blanks, dental implants and surgical micro-components in titanium and stainless.
Shop Tiny Tools →Swiss Line Tooling
Carmex Swiss Line inserts and holders for CNC Swiss lathes. Designed for the small-diameter, high-precision turning of medical components — achieving the surface finish and dimensional accuracy that implants and surgical instruments demand.
Shop Swiss Line →Thread Milling
Solid carbide thread mills for producing bone screw threads, implant threads and surgical instrument features. Thread mill without tap breakage risk — critical when scrapping a 316L stainless or titanium medical component is not an option.
Shop Thread Milling →Micro Drills
Carbide micro drills from 0.2mm diameter for fine hole-making in medical components. Consistent geometry and ground point angles for accurate positioning in titanium, CoCr and stainless steel without drill walk or deflection.
Shop Micro Drills →Carbide End Mills
Solid carbide end mills with sub-micron substrate for profiling and pocketing medical components. Geometry and coating matched to titanium alloys, CoCr and hardened stainless steels used in orthopaedic and cardiovascular devices.
Shop Carbide Milling →CMM Styli
ITP straight, star and cylinder styli for coordinate measuring machines used in medical QC inspection. Ruby, ceramic and carbide ball options — high accuracy, low lobing, compatible with Renishaw, Zeiss and other leading CMM systems.
Shop CMM Styli →Precision Measurement
Digital micrometers, bore gauges, thread gauges and depth gauges for first-article and in-process inspection of medical parts. Calibration certificates available for traceability requirements under ISO 13485 quality management.
Shop Measuring →Precision Toolholding
Ultra-precision collets and toolholders for minimising runout on medical machining centres. Sub-micron runout is critical when producing implant surfaces that must achieve mirror finish without hand-polishing after machining.
Shop Toolholding →When the component goes inside a human body, there's no second chance
Medical device machining is in a category of its own. Bone screws, orthopaedic implants, dental implants, surgical instruments — the tolerances are extreme, the surface finish requirements are strict, and the traceability obligations under ISO 13485 add another layer of complexity on top of the machining itself.
Titanium alloys and CoCr are the predominant materials in orthopaedic implants — both notoriously difficult to machine without built-up edge, poor surface finish and premature tool failure. Micro-drilling in 316L stainless for surgical instruments introduces drill walk and breakage risks that simply don't exist in larger-diameter work.
The Carmex Tiny Tools range — stocked at Protool — was specifically designed for Swiss-type lathe machining of medical micro-components, including bone screws and dental implant blanks. Our team can advise on the right insert, grade and toolholder.
Common Medical Machining Challenges
-
Titanium and CoCr built-up edge
Both Ti and CoCr adhere to cutting faces at elevated temperatures. Sub-micron carbide grades with correct PVD coatings and cutting data are essential to avoid built-up edge and the surface finish problems it causes.
-
Surface finish for biocompatibility
Implant surfaces must meet Ra requirements for osseointegration or tribological performance. Achieving Ra <0.4µm from the machine requires the right tool, holder, cutting data and rigidity — not just polishing afterward.
-
Micro-features and sub-mm drill sizes
Bone screw features, dental implant connection interfaces and surgical instrument channels can require drilling at 0.3–0.8mm diameter. Tool deflection, walk and breakage are major concerns at these scales.
-
ISO 13485 tooling traceability
Medical device quality systems require documented tooling. We can supply calibration certificates for measuring equipment and consistent tool specifications for production traceability records.
Medical Workpiece Materials — We Have the Right Tool
Tools specified for the materials that go into the human body — not just standard materials.
Why Medical Machinists Buy From Protool
When your tooling supports medical device production, you need a supplier you can rely on.

Material-Specific Advice
Titanium and CoCr behave differently. Our team can specify the right grade, coating and cutting data for your workpiece material and operation — not a generic recommendation, a specific one based on your part.

Precision Cutting Tools for Medical Device Manufacturing — Protool Ltd
Protool supplies cutting tools for medical device manufacturers and contract machinists across the UK. Our range includes micro-precision turning tools (Carmex Tiny Tools), Swiss Line inserts, thread milling tools, micro drills, carbide end mills and CMM styli — all stocked for next-day delivery.
Medical device machining operates to standards that few other industries match. Components for bone screws, orthopaedic implants, dental implants, cardiovascular devices and surgical instruments must achieve tight dimensional tolerances, fine surface finishes and complete traceability under ISO 13485. The wrong cutting tool doesn't just affect quality — it can cause scrap of expensive implant-grade materials that are difficult and costly to replace at short notice.
Carmex Tiny Tools for Swiss Lathe Medical Machining
The Carmex Tiny Tools range is one of the most respected micro-precision tooling systems available for Swiss-type CNC lathes. The world's smallest indexable turning and threading inserts, Tiny Tools allow threading from M0.3 upward — making them ideal for bone screw blanks, dental implant turning and micro-precision surgical components in titanium, CoCr and 316L stainless. Protool stocks the full Tiny Tools range with same-day dispatch.
Thread Milling for Medical Bone Screws and Implant Features
Thread milling is increasingly preferred over tapping in medical device production. The single-point interpolation process eliminates the risk of tap breakage — critical when the workpiece is an expensive titanium or CoCr implant blank. Thread milling also allows rework if the thread profile needs adjustment, and a single thread mill can produce multiple thread sizes, reducing tooling inventory. Carmex solid carbide thread mills, available from Protool, cover standard bone screw thread profiles as well as ISO Metric and unified forms used in medical devices.
CMM Styli for Medical QC and Inspection
ITP Styli, stocked at Protool, are used in coordinate measuring machines (CMM) for the precision inspection of medical components. Available in straight, star and cylinder configurations with ruby, ceramic and carbide ball options, ITP styli are compatible with Renishaw, Zeiss, Hexagon and other leading CMM systems. Calibration certificates are available for traceability under ISO 13485 medical quality management systems.
