Oil and gas components present a unique set of machining challenges. The workpieces are often large and expensive — a downhole connector blank in 17-4PH or Inconel represents significant material cost before a single chip is made. Thread profiles must conform to API, NPT or NPTF standards with fit-class requirements that leave no room for interpretation.
The materials commonly used in downhole and wellhead applications — duplex stainless, super duplex, Inconel 718, 17-4PH precipitation hardened stainless and high-strength carbon steels — are all demanding to machine. Deep-hole drilling in hard alloys
Valve bodies and downhole tools require deep through-holes in duplex stainless and nickel alloys. Chip evacuation, drill deflection and heat management become critical at depth in materials with poor thermal conductivity.
