How to Check a Thread with a GO / NO GO Gauge

A gauge gives a pass or a fail, fast, at the machine, with nothing to read or interpret.

  1. 1

    Check the Class

Match the gauge to the drawing: 6H for an internal metric thread, 6g for external, 2B for internal UN.

  2. 2

    Clean Both

Clean the thread and the gauge. Swarf or coolant in the thread gives a false result.

  3. 3

    GO End

The GO end should screw in by hand for the full thread length without force.

  4. 4

    NO GO End

The NO GO end should not enter more than two turns. If it goes further, the thread is oversize.

Questions

Asimeto: Common Questions

What is the difference between a thread plug gauge and a ring gauge?

A plug gauge checks an internal thread, such as a tapped hole. A ring gauge checks an external thread, such as a bolt or stud. Asimeto metric, BSP and UN plug gauges are double-ended, with GO and NO GO on one handle; metric and BSP ring gauges are sold as separate GO and NO GO rings.

What do 6H, 6g and 2B mean?

They are tolerance classes. 6H is the standard class for an internal metric thread and 6g for an external one. 2B is the standard class for an internal UN thread. Choose the gauge in the class shown on your drawing, or the result will not match the specification.

Do I need both a GO and a NO GO ring gauge?

Yes, to fully check an external thread. The GO ring proves the thread is not too large and the form is complete; the NO GO ring proves it is not too small. With only one you check one limit.

Can I get a calibration certificate with an Asimeto gauge?

Yes. UKAS calibration certificates can be added to gauges and instruments; see our UKAS calibration certificates or call 01732 887334.

Which Asimeto caliper should I choose?

The 305 series is IP67 rated for use with coolant. The 306 series has a big screen for easier reading. The 307 series is the standard digital caliper, with an absolute version that keeps its zero when switched off. The 341 series is a manual vernier that needs no battery.

Not Sure Which Gauge or Instrument You Need?
