Heli Coil Taps

Helicoil taps cut the thread form that wire thread inserts lock into — they're not a standard tap and they're not interchangeable with one. When a tapped hole in aluminium, cast iron or mild steel has stripped or worn beyond use, a helicoil insert restores the original thread profile and puts a steel thread in what was previously a softer material. That's the job these taps are designed to do.

We stock helicoil taps in metric sizes from M2 × 0.4 through M14 × 2, plus BSP options including 1/4 × 19. The range covers bottoming taps for blind holes and spiral flute taps where chip clearance is the priority. Each tap is sized specifically for helicoil insert installation — a standard tapping drill and standard tap will not give you the correct minor diameter.

Do I need a helicoil kit or just the tap?

If you're setting up thread repair from scratch, a kit gives you the correct tap, installation tool, and inserts in one pack for a specific thread size. If you already have the tooling and just need replacement inserts or a spare tap, buy individually. Check the individual product pages for exactly what's included in each option.
